Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships build stronger businesses in Croydon

How taking on an apprentice can help local SMEs grow talent, and invest in the community

It’s not about being perfect, it’s about providing an opportunity. From there, the benefits follow

Connecting Croydon’s March event “Strength in Alliance” at Croydon College saw local SMEs, charities and community leaders came together around one powerful truth: when you invest in people, businesses thrive.

Dean Lovell of PumpServ and his apprentice

Hosted by Croydon College, Melanie Gildenhuys described the support and opportunities offered by the College to employers who take on apprentices, followed by an inspirational panel of Croydon businesses and charities outlining their own experiences of apprenticeships.

We heard from Brian Duffus of Duffus Community Foundation, Dean Lovell of PumpServ and his apprentice, Ethan, inspiring us with their positive and rewarding experiences of apprenticeships. All spoke eloquently about what it was like for each of them, what was involved and the many benefits of apprenticeships.

Why apprenticeships work

– Build talent your way: Train apprentices in the exact skills your business needs.
– Boost team culture: Fresh energy and new perspectives can revitalise your workplace.
– Improved retention: Many apprentices stay and grow within the business building loyalty and long-term capability.
– Strengthen Croydon’s community and economy: Giving young people meaningful career opportunities.
– Cost-effective growth: Develop skilled staff without the high cost of external recruitment.

Things to consider

– Time investment: Just like any new starter, apprentices need guidance and mentoring.
– Structure required: A basic plan or supervisor helps you and your apprentice succeed.
– Initial admin: There is some paperwork, but support is available, particularly if you collaborate with Croydon College.

Apprenticeships help preserve specialist skills

Employers highlighted how apprenticeships help preserve specialist skills and create a pipeline of talent. In sectors like engineering, where expertise is becoming harder to find, this approach is proving invaluable.

Just as importantly, it’s not just about business it’s about people. Apprentices gain confidence, life skills, and real-world experience that stays with them forever.

Yes, apprentices need guidance and there’s some admin, but with the right support from Croydon College, these early hurdles soon fade as the long-term impact becomes clear.
